Christmas Book List for Kids

If you’re like me, I get so much joy choosing books for our home and to share with our kids.

We add to our Christmas book collection each year with the kids receiving a pair of Christmas pajamas and a new book on December 1st.

(This is similar to what I do in the Fall - see my last blog post).

We love all Christmas books but prefer the ones that have a deep and beautifully hidden message. Books that are not as well known but have captivating illustrations and leaves your mind wandering with possibilities and wanting more.

So, I thought I’d share a few of our family favorites over the years!

  1. Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree by Robert Barry

This was the new one we added this year!

I love the vintage illustrations and the quirky characters. This is a fun story about a Christmas tree that becomes the gift that keeps on giving.

2. Great Joy by Kate DiCamillo

We have lost the cover to this book but I had to include it in this list. This book has gorgeous illustrations and is about one child’s empathetic heart towards those around them during the season and how it impacted their role in the church Christmas play.

3. The Gingerbread Man Loose at Christmas by Laura Murray

We love all the Gingerbread Man books in this series. They are fun and silly with engaging storytelling.

4. Franklin and Winston - A Christmas that Changed the World by Douglas Wood

This book is excellent and has all of the heartwarming elements that any good Christmas book has along with valuable aspects of our history about these 2 incredible men. This one would be best for older children.

5. Where Happiness Lives by Barry Timms and Greg Abbott

This one is not a Christmas story, however I had to include it because it is a beautifully engaging story about contentment.

It has lift the flaps for younger children and opens up the conversation about being thankful for what we already have rather than always wanting more.

Excellent story with a message all children (and adults) should be reminded of again and again.

6. Gingerbread Mouse by Katy Bratun

This is a darling and whimsical story about a mouse that turns misfortune into something meaningful.

Here are a few more of our family favorites for the kids to look into this Christmas season!

  • The Donkey who Carried a King by R.C. Sproul

  • Five Little Monkeys Looking for Santa by Eileen Christelow

  • The Candy Cane Fiasco by Rachel Hilz

  • The Christmas Wish by Lori Evert

  • The Joy of Giving by Jan and Mike Berenstain

For fun, here are a few of my top recommendations for YOU!

7. Unwrapping the Names of Jesus by Asheritah Ciuciu

This ones for you! I loved this Advent Devotional and plan on doing it every year. There are a plethora of Christmas devotionals to choose from but I appreciated this one because it’s not too overwhelming of a commitment. It was a deep dive into all the names of Jesus and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend!

8. The Noel Diary by Richard Paul Evans

If you haven’t yet read Richard Paul Evans - I highly recommend all of his books. I chose this one because I vividly remember reading the Noel books (there are two more) as a teenager and falling in love with his stories.

This book has been turned into a movie on Netflix this year titled ‘Finding Noel’. It was good, but promise me you’ll read the book first!

I hope this list sparks some interest to get you and your kids reading!

Tell me, what are some of your family favorite Christmas books?

~Rachel
