top book picks for boys

Our family loves reading. My boys are 8, 6, and 1 and I thought it would be fun to highlight a few of their current favorites. I am always on the hunt for book suggestions for my boys so I thought I’d share some that we have loved.

My 8-year-old’s suggestions…

Cowardly Clyde by Bill Peet

This book has it all. Adventure, and humor, mixed in with a life lesson. The illustrations are interesting and well done too. The author has a unique way of writing quirky stories with deep themes and meaning. We have several of Bill Peet’s books and I would highly recommend them all!

Ranger in Time by Kate Messner

This is a fun-loving series where Ranger is a search and rescue dog that travels into different parts of history to save the day. My oldest is a huge dog lover and there are around 10 or more books in this series.

The Dangerous Book for Boys by Conn Iggulden

I adore this book and am so glad my son does as well. It has everything from how to tie knots, how to catch a fish, the 7 wonders of the world, and much more. It encourages curiosity and champions boys learning basic life skills and history.

Bear Grylls Adventures by Bear Grylls and Emma McCann

My boys thoroughly enjoy the wild adventures of Bear Grylls. Each story has survival skills and applicable life lessons. There are 12 books in this series.

The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak

This book keeps you turning the pages to see what will be said next. It is incredibly silly, interactive, and encourages imagination. Overall a very entertaining read!

My 6 year old’s suggestions…

Fast and Furry Racers the Silver Serpent Cup by Jonathan Emmett and Ed Eaves

This book is full of weird and wacky characters in a race following a treasure map. It is an engaging story and each character has a unique vehicle with special abilities. There are 2 books in this series.

Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Patterson

This a classic comic series and my son is currently devouring these. My husband saved this particular book from his childhood which makes it that much more special. The boy and his tiger have endless imagination and escapades together.

The Gingerbread Man Loose on the Fire Truck by Laura Murray

This has been a household favorite. The rhythmic way the author tells the story along with the unique illustrations makes it captivating for kids to read. There are several more in this series too.

What should Danny do? by Ganit & Air Levy

This is a darling choose-your-own-ending book with a twist. Your child determines the direction of the story by the choices they make along the way. It naturally brings up great conversations in a lighthearted way. There are multiple books in this series as well!

Nibbles the Monster Hunt by Emma Yarlett

Nibbles is a book-eating monster and he gets trapped in the stories with characters trying to chase him out. He gets caught in endless mishaps and is silly and everything little boys love. There are currently 4 different Nibbles books.

My 1-year-olds current favorite. The one we read over and over and over….. :)

Where’s Spot? by Eric Hill

My 1-year-old loves all the Spot books and there are several to choose from. I love the simplistic illustrations and he loves to lift the flaps. Great series for little ones!

A few of my favorites…

A Tale of Tails by Elizabeth MacPherson

We have reached for this book numerous times over the years. The story is endearing and such a darling concept.

I just really love this one. I would recommend it for ages 2-4.

Peck, Peck, Peck by Lucy Cousins

This is hands down the best book Lucy Cousins wrote. Kids love to put their fingers in the holes and the story is charming in all the right ways. It has the brightest and best illustrations. All of my children still enjoy this book.
